![]() ![]() When they cut it to 2 AM before final shutdown, the final average ridership numbers were still 13,000. When the MBTA shut down the 2015 attempt for late night service, it had an initial average of 16,000 riders late-night riders. I definitely want a late night reading/study/work spot, but do I really want it? I don't study well at home, I work during the day and when I come home at night I wish there were somewhere else I could go to get some of my coursework done from, let's say 8-12.Īs much as I whine about not having such a place, I confess that I'm one of those who would go once or twice at the beginning of a semester and then fall into the habit of staying home and following my wife to bed at ten each night. I won't deign to speak for city-wide demand, but as someone who has recently re-entered grad school in their early 40s, I frequently bemoan the lack of places that the OP describes. The post you're replying to questioned the demand and differentiated between 'wanting' and 'using' these kinds of things. It may be a town in which many colleges exist, but it is no sense of the word a "college town". Then I went and followed my now wife to grad school at a large Big XII school (for however much longer the BIG XII exists) and quickly learned that Boston is absolutely not a college town. Growing up and having spent my first 30 years here I always thought of Boston as a college town too. For the Boston area, it lives and survived by the late-night study of college students.Įven though we live in a college town, it is not a college town. I miss it too, though I admit part of why its gone is I didn't use it that much. ![]() And the each hour it opens has to generate enough revenue to justify its existence. If demand is still there, it will be a slow hour by hour expansion. It's hard for a place like Diesel to return to late night hours when they haven't even revived evening hours. So either demand has to be just that high to fuel it (and I know my own habits isn't frequent enough) or business operations has to get cheaper. ![]() Labor costs are making that threshold even higher to reach now. Once something is gone, it takes energy (someone consciously making a change, hire staff, make it a norm again) to bring it back. The COVID line is a reason too, but it breaks down to the above. I would list more examples but admittedly my memory is fuzzy. ![]() Like Harvard Sq used to be 24 hour late-night Starbucks or Clover Food Lab is not a coffee place but used to be 24 in Cambridge. If no recent results for the same kind of inquiry exist, feel free to start a discussion!Īs others already said, there used to be late night places. Still curious?
